Meaningful conversation has the capacity to give so much, the opportunity to learn, grow, and also help someone else learn and grow... At work I find a lot of my clients have low opinions of themselves, failing to see that they have survived in the face of adversity, their resilience, and I always make sure that I explain that the fact that they made it to me means that they already have so many positive attributes... Wanting the best outcome for your family is a wonderful attribute...
I am the first to challenge negative behaviour, with my kids, at work and with my friends and family, but also the first to give a well thought out observation that is taken as a compliment... I don't usually say things about how people look, to be honest, I don't really notice, I am usually too busy looking at who you are, what you do, how you do it, it's more meaningful for me to tell you how great you are at something, a life skill for instance, than to notice you cut your hair... I would prefer you talk about how well you did something in your life than how you look... I know some people need that kind of compliment, I'm just not very good at giving them...
However you do it though, notice the great things about the people around you, and tell them! It's usually welcome...
